Applied Partial Differential Equations with Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems, 5th Edition by Richard Haberman.

Course Goals

By the end of the semester, we hope

to apply differential calculus to common physical problems (i.e. heat conduction, wave propagation)
to solve linear partial differential equations (PDEs) using the method of separation of variables.
to incorporate boundary conditions into solutions of PDEs.
to adopt a linear operator view of PDEs.
to find eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of partial differential operators.
to understand Sturm-Liouville theory in the context of PDEs.
to use Sturm-Liouville theory to build Fourier series.
to understand the unusual convergence properties of Fourier series.
to gain an intuition about the frequency content of Fourier coefficients.

Canvas Modules

All of the work you are expected to complete will be organized in Canvas modules. Just follow the modules and you'll be fine. You won't miss anything. What follows is a summary of the kinds of work you'll be doing in the class.

Reading Responses (10%)

Individual class periods are designed with the assumption that you have read the day's material in advance. A typical class will have us going over some discussion problems and then perhaps some explanation of the more esoteric ideas in the readings. To support this activity most days will have a short pre-class "Readback" form for you to fill out. Remember it's timestamped and is due at least 3 hours before the start of class.

No late Readbacks will be accepted.

Your average score on Readbacks is worth 10% of the final grade.

Homework (30%)

There will be regular homework assignments. Your overall homework average will comprise 30% of your grade.

The assignments will be evaluated on the quality of a select subset of exercises (write-up problems), the completeness of the entire set, and the organization and presentation of the submission. While changes may be made to the week's assignment as the week progresses, ample notice will be given.

The write-up problems are indicated by asterixes and are to be written up according to the Writing Style Guidelines. The rest of the problems are to be written clearly and neatly, but not to the level specified in the style guidelines—no Above & Beyond is necessary. All of the problems are to help you learn the material. Writing up the problems helps to solidify your understanding and provides you a written record of exercises to aid your exam studies.

Above & Beyond. Each write-up problem must have a modest extension that you formulate and include on your own, in addition to the assigned work. There must also be a brief written description of the piece of the assignment that you consider to be the Above & Beyond component (so that I'll know what to look for). This requirement will be worth roughly 10% of any particular exercise grade.

Late Policy. If your homework is LaTeX: d days late, then your grade will be docked by $LaTeX: \frac{d(d+1)}{2}$ percentage points.

Quizzes (15%)

There will be several short in-class quizzes. Typically you'll be presented with a single exercise to complete. You will be able to use your book and notes during the quizzes.

Exams (45%)

There will be two exams during the semester and one final exam. The final exam will be cumulative.

The exam scores will be averaged and equally weighted (except for the final exam). The final exam will receive double the weight of an ordinary exam.
